‘Advance’ is more wide-reaching than many people realise and includes:
- Appreciably improving a process, material, device, product or service.
- An advance that may have already been achieved by a competitor, but the know-how behind the development is a trade secret.
- Combining known technologies in a different way to produce a new technology.
- Adapting known technology to be used in a different way or applied to a different product or service.
For example in:
Manufacturing – Improving a process to manufacture something more cheaply, quickly or efficiently; or designing/developing manufacturing processes when producing new prototype parts made from new material.
Construction – Designing bespoke fixings to accommodate extreme weight of large/unique features; or developing a method for construction within a confined space.
Architecture – Designing new ways of accomplishing unique architectural features; or appreciably improving energy efficiency.
IT – Combining known technologies in a different way to produce a new technology; adapting IT to a niche industry; resolving conflicts within hardware or software; or creating new/more efficient algorithms.
